Information for International applicants

To be registered as regular students in the Course, applicants shall:

either

  1. satisfy the general requirements for admission as specified in the Admissions Regulationsor
  2. be in possession of a qualification in an environmental education/sustainability domain, comprising not less than 120 ECVET credits or equivalent, and classified at MQF Level 4, as well as passes in the Secondary Education Certificate Examination at Grade 5 or better in English Language, Maltese and Mathematics.

Applicants may also be admitted as Adult Learners under paragraph (c) of regulation 6 of the Admissions Regulations. Such applicants must be in possession of those qualifications and/or experience that would satisfy the interviewing board, through an interview, that they have reached the academic standard required to follow the Course with profit. Such applicants shall be required to submit with their application a letter written in English giving their motivation for joining the Course, together with a copy of their {iCurriculum Vitaei}.

Applicants admitted as Adult Learners shall be in possession of a pass in an English language proficiency test as approved by the University before being admitted to the Course, provided that applicants in possession of a Secondary Education Certificate pass at Grade 3 or higher in English Language or a pass at the same standard in a comparable qualification, shall be exempt from this requirement.

Applications for our February and October intakes have been officially open since the third week in November. You can submit your application online. The deadlines for submission of applications vary according to the intake and courses. We encourage all international applicants to submit their applications as soon as possible. This is especially important if you require a visa to travel and eventually stay in Malta.

The Certificate in Environmental Interpretation and Education aims to present you with different perspectives of:

(i) Sustainable Development,

(ii) Education for Sustainable Development

(iii) the interaction between the environment & society - specifically in natural areas

(iv) different environmental management, environmental planning, socio-economic perspectives;

(v)about/through/for approaches to Sustainable Development; and

(vi) various environmental, and social contexts within which SD can be applied.

Moreover, each study unit offered will also have a very strong practical component providing you with first hand experiences of current and prospective environmental/sustainable development issues.

By the end of the course, you will have accumulated a wide range of knowledge, from Heritage Interpretation, Biodiversity and participatory process, to sustainable development issues and the Maltese Environment, to name a few.

Requirement for award of Certificate in Environmental Interpretation and Education: 32 ECTS credits

This programme of study is governed by the General Regulations for University Undergraduate Awards, 2019 and by the Bye-Laws for the award of Certificate in Environmental Interpretation and Education under the auspices of the Centre of Environmental Education and Research.

More specifically, the Certificate in Environmental Interpretation and Education will enable you to:

  • Holistically describe the Maltese natural environment.
  • Identify and communicate the knowledge, values, attitudes, commitment and skills needed to promote sustainable environments.
  • Identify and suggest new patterns of sustainable behaviour of individuals, groups and society as a whole.
  • Identify the main principles of Education for Sustainable Development.
  • Identify local biodiversity and local ecosystems.
  • Appraise the importance of developing partnerships between individuals and the broader community to achieve sustainability.

  1. Subject knowledge and understanding
    • holistically describe the Maltese natural environment
    • describe global and local environmental issues
    • identify the main principles of interdisciplinarity within Sustainable Development
    • identify the main principles of Education for Sustainable Development
    • identify local biodiversity and local ecosystems
    • describe habitat management principles
    • describe Natura 2000 sites and Marine Protected Areas and their implications to education and conservation
    • appraise the complexity of environmental problems and thus the need to apply critical thinking and problem
    • solving skills.
    • apply scientific, historical, political, economic and cultural perspectives to evaluate suggested and applied environmental solutions

  2. Intellectual Development
    • choose adequate methodologies to interpret the environment for individuals and communities
    • choose adequate methodologies to tackle environmental issues on site
    • appraise the economic, social, political and ecological interdependence in rural settings
    • plan, individually or in a team, to address environmental issues at the community, regional and national levels
    • evaluate biodiversity issues from a broad perspective
    • plan, individually or in a team, outreach and outdoor activities that engage participants in sustainable development issues.
